Playing the streaming game

June 21st, 2013 at 10:47 pm

A few weeks ago, I finally decided to check out the Downton Abbey series and see what all the excitement was about. I am so glad I did! I am totally in love with it!

To start off, I watched season 1 on Netflix (we have the streaming package). I was ready to watch season 2 and couldn't find it on Netflix. After some research, I discovered Netflix didn't have season 2. In fact, they are losing the streaming rights for season 1 any time now.

I then discovered that Hulu Plus has season 2. I signed up for a free 1 week trial, and got busy on season 2. I cancelled my free trial last night.

Now, I am planning on getting a 30 day free Amazon Prime trial to watch season 3. I am, however, double checking, to make sure it really is a free 30 day trial. If so, I am on board! An Amazon prime yearly subscription is $79. That works out cheaper per month than Netflix and Hulu Plus. It also seems, they may have more tv and movies to offer. If so, we may consider switching to Amazon and dumping Netflix.

For reference, we still have DISH network. Can't see the hubby giving that up though.

What about you? Do you still have cable and/or satelite? Streaming only? If streaming only, which service do you use and are you happy with it?

Too funny....WE just started watching Downton Abbey. Saw at the library and thought I'd check it out. Didn't think to check Netflix!! Only watched four episodes, but like it alot.

Amazon Prime is FREE for the first 30 days.

I *love* Amazon Prime. It's like Netflix but with free two-day shipping. We got the free trial one year for Christmas shopping and have never looked back. We cancelled our Netflix. And now I put a little money away for the annual fee each month so when the larger amount comes due I can easily pay it without stretching my budget.

I was able to stream Downton Abbey right from the PBS.org website.

@FreebieQueen, where those recent episodes or all the way back to the first episode? I looked by can't even find one episode right now.

It was definitely the last season. I think I watched the first 2 on Netflix or Amazon. I wonder if PBS made deals with Netflix or Amazon to do the streaming for them, which if that is what they are doing that stinks since PBS is supported by the public.

I've never used Amazon Prime. So, because of this post, I just hopped over to check it out. I noticed some of my favorite shows (such as The Office) have a price of $1.99 per episode. What is that about? Am I seeing that because I am not a member?

@Petunia, I don't know how it works exactly, but not ALL shows are free with Amazon Prime and you are seeing The Office correctly. They are not free with Amazon Prime. Thus I think this is why we still have Netflix in addition to AP.

I also believe PBS will not be showing the older seasons online at some point, if they actually still even do. I think Amazon is going to have exclusive rights in the near future for all seasons, since it is such a popular show. I am using the 30 day free trial to watch season 3 and also check to see if they actually offer any more than Netflix does.
