I feel so bad! (warning...rant ahead)

May 4th, 2011 at 02:44 am

My oldest dd is in college about 1 to 1 1/2hrs away(depending on traffic).

She FINALLY received a phone call for an interview for a hostess position at a local steakhouse about a mile from home. She has been applying for jobs constantly for the past month or so hoping to find work for the summer. We were so excited!

Only problem? They wanted to interview her today at 3:30....ok...that works with her schedule but sucks to have to drive that far just for an interview. So home she comes....she gets to the interview and is there for about 2 minutes before the girl tells her "we don't hire only for the summer". Really? You KNEW where she was driving from (from the phone conversation), KNEW from her application that she is a current college student! And she had the stupidity to ask her if she was going to commute! She then said "oh I guess I should have asked you about that" (her location she meant)

DD called me at work in tears. I got home and she just started crying. I felt so bad. She drove all that way and had to put gas in her tank (we are now almost a $4.00/gallon). On top of that, she was going to stay for dinner so she didn't have to drive back in rush hour traffic and then ended up having to leave soon after I got home because she had to get back to school by 7:00 for somethiing to do with housing next year. She is also going to miss dinner at school because the dining hall will be closed by the time she gets there so I loaded her up with snacks.

Oh....I am just so angry....you can bet we won't be going to that place to eat....EVER!

Sorry for the rant....just had to vent! Frown

    Well, that sucks!

I don't know how many interviews I went on in college where they asked stupid questions like, "You don't have any experience in this field?" Well, if I did, don't you think I'd put it on my resume? I wondered if anyone ever read resumes, for a time.

I suppose next time don't tell them it is only for summer. Rolleyes I am all for being respectful of employer's time to hire/train someone, etc. But as far as servers go, how often do people stay more than 3 months, anyway. They may find a really great long-term summer employee (future summers, etc.). It seems to me employers are extra sensitive these days to any factor that means you might not stick around long. Maybe employees are extra flaky - I don't know. My husband has been through similar things. Actually got some interviews, but then they look at his resume and say they need people who don't have commitments (his only commitment is his kids. The only thing his resume shows was he has been unemployed for a few years. Feedback is they need more commitment - than a guy who has a family to feed? It's kind of crazy? I thought, "yes, and college students stay around forever!" - but maybe college kids are facing the same scrutiny these days).

I know the feeling. I once went for an interview 3 hours one way, immediately could tell the woman was a b*****, then at the end she tells me she knew ahead of time I wouldn't be what they were looking for, but my resume was so interesting she just wanted to meet the person with the experiences I had. Afterwards I checked with some of my professional contacts that confirmed no one liked to work with her. If I only know that ahead of time. Simply said, some people have "issues".

There's something else afoot. Hostess jobs tend to be revolving door jobs anyway ... the person they hire even if they are in the neighborhood are there, tops, for six months. No one retires on that job, if you know what I mean.

Frankly hostesses are hired somewhat for "the look". They don't have to be drop dead gorgeous, but their appearance has to match either the clientele they have or the one they want to get. My thought was that the interviewee took a look and bailed.

I'm so sorry that it was a bad experience. Scratch the surface on any of us and we all have crappy interview stories and that's during better times. How anybody gets hired these days is anybody's guess.

That is so incredibly lame, and it had to lead to a really frustrating day overall... I remember when I was in undergrad that I also had a really hard time finding any job AT ALL. I finally got one as a dishwasher, and it was a horrible experience. They actually were trying to get me to quit the university and work there full time so that I could eventually become a server (and MAYBE someday an Assistant Manager!) with tips and insurance benefits. Ugh, no thanks. I hope that your daughter finds something else - and soon!
